🇫🇷 Kylian Mbappé Buys French Football Club
Kylian Mbappé has become the majority shareholder of French side SM Caen. An active player owning a club is rare. Today we break it down.
I wonder how many people were watching the 100m Final last night worldwide.
What an excellent race in Paris and what an excellent result for the sport that Noah Lyles took home the gold.
Like it or not, Athletics is a sport built on characters and Lyles embodies that more than anyone since Usain Bolt himself.
Kishane Thompson is a great sprinter with a bright future. But an unknown Jamaican in his first major tournament becoming Olympic Champion does not help the growth of the sport at all. See Marcell Lamont Jacobs as proof of that.
There’s an excellent story about self-belief in Lyles’ journey. Hopefully he does the 200m double and talks even more shit.
Welcome to all the new subscribers to the platform, today we explore the next evolution in Kylian Mbappé’s journey. He is a man who can say whatever he damn likes…
Kylian Mbappé has bought a French football club.
Stade Malherbe Caen are a Ligue 2 side previously owned by American Private Equity firm Oaktree Capital.
You may be familar with Oaktree. They are the new and recent owners of Inter Milan after a crazy journey to become the majority owners of the Milanese club.
Mbappé paid €20m for 80% of the French club and will appoint Ziad Hammoud, his current Head of Image as President to run the footballing operations.
I love everything about this mans career so far:
PSG paid ÂŁ180m for him at age 21
Saudi offered him ÂŁ650m at 23
Real Madrid gave him €100m in a sign-on fee at 24
He owns a football club at 25
An interesting question presents itself with this acquisition. Let’s imagine SM Caen get promoted over the next few seasons. They then make more strides and qualify for Europe in a couple of years after that.
It’s very plausible that Kylian Mbappe is say 29 years old playing against the club that he owns in the UEFA Champions League!
What on earth will happen then?!
Oaktree Capital are fierce operators when it comes to Sports. If you haven’t already, watch the following video to see their Inter Milan story. This is by far the most popular video I have ever made on social media:
See you next week.
