šŸ† Crystal Palace and Tottenham Win Big. Here's How Big...

These two teams have had great weeks. Today we explore just how much...

I can’t believe Manchester United lost in the Europa League Final.

Genuinely cannot believe it.

Later in this edition you will see the impact of this on the club. But my word what an abject performance in Bilbao.

Alas, welcome to the 277 of you who joined the newsletter this week. I get several messages from people telling me that they share my YouTube channel and my newsletter with their friends and colleagues. Well, now I will pay you to do so!

From now on, the game looks like this:

We are growing this year and you all can play a part in it. Your referral tag looks like this:

Now, onto this weeks words…

Here is what Crystal Palace are in line for as a result of winning the FA Cup last week.

  • Ā£1.91m for making it to the final of the FA Cup

  • Ā£2m more for winning the FA Cup

  • Ā£3.6m for simply making it to the Europa League

  • Ā£2.92 from the Matchday revenue from the guaranteed 4 home games they will play in the Europa League (CFC average Ā£730K per home game)

In addition to the above, they will make £126K for every Group Stage Draw in the Europa League next season. They will make £378K for every Group Stage win! If they manage to make it out of the Group Stage they will make £500K for qualifying for the knockout stages.

I am chuffed that they made it, especially considering they beat Man City at Wembley to get there. As you can see, being in Europe has major benefits to a club like Crystal Palace. They reported £190.2m in revenue in the 2023/24 season, this may jump by a considerable margin by being in Europe.

In addition, maybe their most lucrative revenue-driver will be the amount of new commercial partners they will likely be able to court now that they play in a European competition.

What a fantastic story for the team and for Oliver Glasner.

Also, what a fantastic story for Tottenham Hotspur. If we did the exact same exercise with them it looks… alot healthier!

  • Ā£26.41m for making it to the final of the Europa League Final thus far

  • Ā£5m more for winning the Europa League

  • Ā£15.9m for simply making it to the Champions League

  • Ā£19.6m from the Matchday revenue from the guaranteed 4 home games they will play in the Europa League (THFC average Ā£4.9m per home game)

In addition to the above, the UCL rewards are alot better than the EL rewards. Spurs will make £602k for every Group Stage Draw. They will make £1.81m in the Champions League next season for every win. If they finish in the Top 8 they get £1.7m and another £9.46m if they make it to the Round of 16.

The Champions League is big business and in complete contrast to Crystal Palace I am absolutely gutted United couldn’t secure the bag.

Sport hasn’t made me feel like this in a while.

Before we leave, something I didn’t cover touch on last week. Virat Kohli has announced a retirement from Test Cricket ahead of the Indian Tour of England here this summer.

He is one of my favourite athletes in the world so it was a disappointment for me to know he won’t be playing here in the UK in the coming months.

I consider this man to be the best batsman of all time. I do not think there is a more impactful player in modern cricket history and his dominance in the game across all formats of cricket for a ten-year stretch has been incredible to watch.

Many people reading this may not even know who he is so to put this into perspective here is a list of the most followed athletes on Instagram currently

  • Cristiano Ronaldo: 643m

  • Lionel Messi: 505m

  • Virat Kohli: 273m

  • Neymar: 223m

  • LeBron James: 160m

In addition, he is the highest paid IPL player in the tournaments’ history earning close to top available dollars since he started playing in the tournament almost 17 years ago:

  • 2008: Ā£12,000

  • 2009: Ā£12,000

  • 2010: Ā£12,000

  • 2011: Ā£828,000

  • 2012: Ā£828,000

  • 2013: Ā£828,000

  • 2014: Ā£1,250,000

  • 2015: Ā£1,250,000

  • 2016: Ā£1,250,000

  • 2017: Ā£1,250,000

  • 2018: Ā£1,700,000

  • 2019: Ā£1,700,000

  • 2020: Ā£1,700,000

  • 2021: Ā£1,700,000

  • 2022: Ā£1,500,000

  • 2023: Ā£1,500,000

  • 2024: Ā£1,500,000

  • 2025: Ā£2,100,000

Finally, he has just left Puma.

His 8yr/Ā£11m contract ended recently and he turned down an extension worth three times as much. Instead Kohli has invested in Agilitas Sports, a homegrown Indian sportswear startup founded in 2023.

He is beginning his transition into owner and ambassador similar to what Tom Brady is doing with NoBull and what Roger Federer has done with On Running.

With such a big audience and so much influence over the world, it wouldn’t surprise me if this move is the biggest move he ever makes.

What an incredible athlete, I’d love to interview this man one day.

See you next week.
