🥊 The £1bn fight for British Boxing
This week we explore how Anthony Joshua holds the keys to the future of British Boxing
Katie Taylor is a beast.
What an important win this weekend - adding to her incredible CV. If you haven’t been paying attention she is:
The first female boxer to headline a card at Madison Square Garden
The first woman to make ÂŁ1m purse from a boxing fight
The holder of the highest-grossing gate in women’s boxing history
With her win on Saturday she now has two massive options ahead of her. The Trilogy with Chantelle Cameron or re-match Amanda Serrano.
Not many speak about the economic powerhouse that Katie Taylor truly is. But her story is not lost on me. Some big nights and some big pay-days to come from her.
She is also a key part in Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom boxing stable. The focus of todays newsletter.
British boxing is arguably in the most lucrative place it has ever been. Today we look at the landscape of boxing in the UK and why we are poised for many more successful years to come.
Anthony Joshua is without a doubt the most important boxer in recent memory.
His ascension has provided a lucrative underbelly for many fighters behind him.
Alongside his personal success, his alignment with Eddie Hearn has also spawned an unbelievable arms race in British boxing.
In short, we have three promotional companies and three broadcasters.
The equation is simple, if you’re a promising boxer you must align yourself with a promoter and thus choose your broadcasting home. They key caveat being its very hard to fight someone who isn’t in your promotional house!
If you’re a promoter your job is to put boxing cards on that are as entertaining as possible to deliver value to your broadcaster.
If you’re a broadcaster you must pay an amount of money to your Boxing Promoter in the hope to make more from the interest they drive to your platform.
As a fan, I am loving the choice and the abundance we have currently. It’s not cheap, but it has truly never been like this before.
However, dominance in the scene doesn’t come without its challenges.
We start with the current Heavyweight Champion of the world, Tyson Fury and his home at BT TNT Sports.

Frank Warren has arguably had the best year of his entire career in 2023.
At the beginning of the 2010’s Frank Warren was the CEO and founder of BoxNation - a DAZN-esque venture entirely for boxing fans.
Annoyingly, the British boxing scene was not as prominent as it is now and the business failed. Since then, the resurgence of Tyson Fury has lifted Frank Warren back to the fore.
Late last year Tyson Fury sold out Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when he fought Dereck Chisora. Tyson also headlined Riyadh Season when he fought Francis Ngannou for a pretty penny last month.
However, with Daniel Dubois and Anthony Yarde, two promising prospects experiencing trajectory-hurting losses in recent times its pretty clear that Frank Warren’s entire job is to extend the Tyson Fury gravy train as long as possible.
Thankfully, Tyson has an epic fight with Oleksandr Usyk coming up which should be a brilliant spectacle for everyone.
Without Tyson however, there is not much else behind him over at Queensberry…
Matchroom Boxing | Promoter: Eddie Hearn

Eddie Hearn is a visionary, and his current vision is making Matchroom a dominant global brand in the world of boxing.
DAZN are well-backed (UK’s Richest Man Len Blavatnik) and have been throwing money at fighters for a few years.
Eddie’s problems however are a little different. He has the roster, but his biggest challenge is convincing the casual British Boxing fan to pay £19.99 per month to watch regular Matchroom cards on DAZN.
Anthony Joshua holds the key as he is Box Office viewing wherever he goes.
Conor Benn was gearing up to be the key player behind AJ but he has had some… troubles recently.
Canelo Alvarez was also a key player but he signed elsewhere.
Katie Taylor is a star but nowhere near as visible as her male contemporaries.
So Eddie must always fight to keep his brand at the forefront of peoples minds. He does that expertly with the way he uses social media. But remove HIM from the picture, does he have the platform that creates superstars?
So far we are yet to see it in the DAZN era.
The irony being the biggest platform in the UK doesn’t have the talent…

The Sky Sports machine was turning brilliantly for 10 years whilst working with Matchroom Boxing making stars, and in some cases superstars) out of Kell Brook, Carl Froch, Dillian Whyte and Anthony Joshua.
Since Matchroom have left the building, they’ve struggled.
They partnered with Ben Shalom and his fledgling Boxxer stable and despite poaching some fighters from Eddie Hearn they haven’t made a dent in the wider picture in the UK.
Ben Whittaker is one of the most promising future stars of the sport but the casual fan doesn’t know about him.
Joshua Buatsi and Lawrence Okolie have struggled to deliver returns for Sky since moving over from Eddie.
Their roster has a lack of star power and they’ve struggled to put entertaining cards together.
What’s clear is Anthony Joshua despite his current perception is still the economic powerhouse of them all.
The December 23rd “Day of Reckoning” card is a Saudi-backed money spinner which will $omehow bring Frank Warren, Eddie Hearn and Ben Shalom together on one card!
Despite this, the entire night will be broadcast globally on DAZN around the world largely because AJ has an exclusive deal with DAZN and cannot be shown anywhere else.
If he beats Otto Wallin he is staring in the face of a Saudi based Wilder fight which will be the most lucrative boxing match in some time.
